Well it has been a LONG time since any entry on this blog. Pehaps best then to keep it simple – have a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year and see you in 2012! We’ll try and do a better blog next year!

Film Event – the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Hello!
To mention our next film event at St John’s.
Each year we have been showing a number of films.

These events are free and open to all – to those who attend St John’s and those who don’t.

Our next film is the popular ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ -the Disney version which was released in 2005.

A tremendous film which brings to the screen the classic children’s book by CS Lewis which is part of the Chronicles of Narnia series (the third film has just been released in the cinemas – the Voyage of the Dawn Treader).

On the 18th March, we will be showing the second Narnia film – Prince Caspian. Also in church, at 7pm.

Fairs and Carols

Today, is our Christmas Fair. Always a great occasion and a lovely atmosphere as people pop in to have a look, to search for a bargain, to bring the kids to meet Santa, or to say hello and get a bite of lunch or a warm cuppa. It is a lovely low key piece of time spent getting into that Christmas build up… Begins at 12noon and will run until 4pm – but do come early if you’d like a bargain! Held in a church hall at the bottom of the St John’s church grounds.

And on Friday (10th), we’ll be having our Carol service. Held in church and begins at 7pm. It takes place mostly in candlelight, as we hear familiar bible readings and sing traditional carols and reflect again upon what those readings and those sung words and the events of Christmas at Bethlehem, what all those things mean for us this year. The service is a popular one, and there are refreshments afterwards. Do pop in if you can!

Christmas services

Christmas is probably coming quicker than we expected! And already the websites are suggesting it could be snow on Christmas Day…!

St John’s will be doing various things around Christmas and holding various services as we celebrate this important and exciting time in not only the church calendar but in the lives of everyone.
There is a detailed page of our services over Christmas period on this website. A range of services – carol service, family service on Sunday before Christmas (for families who may find the Christmas period just too busy, due to travelling to see family, welcoming visitors etc), midnight communion and a short service on Christmas Day.

Our Annual Christmas fair is on Saturday 4th December where there are loads of bargains for little gifts, and also, we have heard, Santa may well be making an appearance too…
And our youth group, the Zone, will be putting on a pantomine on Wednesday 23rd December, at 4pm – certainly another event for the family.
And, if you live in the New Works area, we will be carol singing for charity, on Tuesday 21st, in the evening…

Alpha Away Day

One of the highpoints of the Alpha Course is this coming Saturday – the Alpha Away Day!

Each Alpha Course has a series of teachings on the Holy Spirit – who is he, what does he do and how can we be empowered (‘filled’) with the Holy Spirit. Normally these teachings are on a single day, or on a weekend.

This Saturday our Alpha Away day will be at the Greenwood Centre in Coalbrookedale. Four churches – three Anglican and one Methodist – will be represented – St Leonard’s, Malinslee, River Community Church, Admaston Methodist Church and of course St John’s Lawley. These are always special and meaningful times together with a special sense often of God somehow working among those who are there.

There should be around 30 of us on the day, and Revd Mark Salmon, vicar from Holy Spirit, Harlescott will be doing the teaching sessions, and Revd Steve Kelly, vicar of River Community Church, will help lead the music.

Time has flown by! The Away Day normally comes after week 6 of the Alpha Course – and we are already there. It seems only a short time ago we began the course at the start of October.

People are enjoying it, enjoying learning, asking questions, sharing, and it is running well.

So we look forward to our Alpha Away day on Saturday! Do ask anyone you know going, how it went!

Christmas is coming

Our Christmas is approaching. St John’s is running it’s annual christmas fair. A great place to get those little Christmas presents. There are lots of stalls – selling practically everything and anything. And a chance to get a bite to eat – as we service a lunch and cream teas, when it starts.

Always a popular and fun day! Check it out if you haven’t been before.

It starts from 12noon til 4pm, on Saturday 4th December in St John’s Church Hall (at the bottom of the church grounds). Car parking is available.

Alpha Course – starting soon

Alpha – a chance to ask questions, to think if there is more to life than this… Begins on Wednesday 6th October here at St John’s, from 7.15-9pm. We are having a launch event on Wednesday 29th September. All this is taking place in the church hall at St John’s…. And you’d be very welcome to come along…

Grill a bishop

Well the time has come!

This Sunday there is the opportunity to grill the bishop of Shrewsbury, Rt Revd Mark Rylands!

We are having a service to celebrate 145 years since the establishment of St John’s in the area of Lawley. 1865 it was founded, originally to be a church to the mining community as well as local residents. St John’s is named after one of the four writers of the accounts of the life of Jesus…

Our service begins at 1030 this Sunday (12th Sept), and it will be led by Bishop Mark. Afterwards we are having a meal at which Bishop Mark has agreed to be grilled – that anyone there can ask him any question they’d like and he’ll give as honest an answer as he can.

It should be good – a chance for church members and guests to meet the relatively new bishop of Shrewsbury; a chance to hear Bishop Mark to reflect on Jesus words in Luke 15,verses 1-10 which remind us of God mission to reach those who are lost and the value he places on that and the celebration which comes in heaven when the lost are reached, the lost are brought home, to where they should be. And a chance to be together with other Christians – St Leonard’s Malinslee have been invited to join us on Sunday…

Grill a Bishop

Sunday 12th September we have the chance to Grill a bishop! Bishop Mark Rylands, Bishop of Shrewsbury, is leading the church service that morning, and he will be staying for a meal in the church hall. Part of the meal, he is willing to take any question from those there – whether it is ‘what did Noah do on the ark all that time? ‘what about evil?’ ‘why are you a Bishop?’ etc etc. He’ll will give each question as honest an answer as possible.

All welcome to come along to that service on Sunday 12th September. 1030 start, and it will be a service shared with St Leonard’s church. If you would like to stop for the meal, do contact us so we know numbers for food.
